Kisetsu Textbook

Kisetsu is a series of four Japanese language textbooks for middle and high school students. Kisetsu aims to help students become not only successful communicators in Japanese but also self-directed and reflective learners, skillful problem solvers, and active, sensitive, and productive participants in the global community. Kisetsu also reflects National Standards for Foreign Language Education and educational programs such as AP (Advanced Placement) Program and IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma Progaramme.

Overview

A sequence of conceptual units has been developed in order to realize the aforementioned goals and objectives and these units facilitate a meaningful progression of learning throughout projects.

The Volume 1 “Haruichiban”

The first volume, Haruichiban, contains two preliminary sections (Getting Started I and Getting Started II) and the first two of the conceptual units (Encounter and Awareness). The units are broken down into four thematically organized chapters. The accompanying chart at the beginning of the book allows users to see how the five goals of foreign language education identified in National Standards – Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, Communities – are incorporated in the textbook.

The Volume 1 “Ginga”

The second volume, Ginga, helps learners who finished Haruichiban move from beginner to intermediate and contains two conceptual units (Reflection and Environment). The units are broken down into four thematically organized chapters. Ginga emphasizes encouragement of autonomous learners, recognition of text style and audience and association of writing and reading comprehension. The accompanying chart at the beginning of the book is the same chart as the one in Haruichiban and corresponds with National Standards - Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, Communities.
